Hiring an Automatic car is ideal when visiting Germany. The ease of driving an automatic vehicle in Germany makes it an enjoyable experience. When driving in Germany, a full licence is essential, ans seat belts in the front and rear of the vehicle.

You should always carry your vehicle registration document (V5), driving licence, and certificate of motor insurance.

If your licence does not have a photograph, then make sure you carry your passport to validate your licence. If the vehicle is not registered in your name, carry a letter from the registered owner giving you permission to drive.

Advice on Driving in Germany:

• Front and back seat belts are compulsory at all times.
  
• There are no toll payments to be made on German Autobahns.
• When approaching a roundabout, you must give way to traffic already on the roundabout, on your left, unless otherwise signed.
  
• Be cautious when moving off from restaurants and fuel stations on the left hand side of the road. The penalty for traffic offences including speeding, are subject to on-the spot fines.
• Be careful when overtaking and allow more space between your car and the vehicle in front, so you can see further down the road ahead.
• Germany has very strict drink driving laws, only allowing 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood, where in the the UK the limit is 0.8.
  

All grades of unleaded diesel, petrol and LPG are available, and you are permitted to carry petrol in a can. Debit and credit cards are widely accepted, but they may not work at automatic pumps.

A lot of out of town garages only have automatic pumps available during lunch time, evenings and the weekend.

It is good advice to let your card issuer know you will be travelling abroad, to ensure they don't suspend your card if they find it being used in unusual places, which they can do as an anti-fraud measure.
